Farewell Knoxville!

Dear friends, family, and supporters this will be the last post you
see under this version of my website for some time.

Let me start this post off by thanking God and the guidence and
blessings he has bestowed on my life, not only would I not be here
without him, I would not have had the courage to run this race if it
had not of been for the strength I found in him.

I would next like to thank my volunteer staff, who worked just as hard
as any paid staff and sacrificed just as much as I did for what they
believed in. First I would like to thank Seth Deaton for being the
best campaign manager possible, not only did Seth, who was recently
married sacrifice HIS time, he sacrificed time with his new wife to
work tirelessly for my campaign, Seth is truly a man of honor and of
integrity and it was a pleasure to have him work beside me. I also owe
a thanks to Mrs.Deaton for her being willing to sacrifice time with
Seth while he carried out his duties.

Hello Knoxville!

Welcome dear friends and fellow citizens of Knoxville.  It is my hope and desire that you will take the time to learn about my candidacy and the principles that I stand for while visiting our website today.  You will not find a lot of “fluff” or attempts to play myself up on the site.  I am a working class man with a hope and a vision for this city, its families, and the communities they live in to grow and prosper as we move forward.  I believe it’s time the people were heard and listened to again, and I would consider it to be the greatest honor to serve as the people’s Mayor.   Please, feel free to contact us with any questions, comments, or concerns you may want to share.

Final Debate Before Early Voting

WATE and the League of Women Voters held a forum at West High School on September 6, 2011.

This was one of the last forum before early voting starts on September 7 and one of the last major events for all the candidates to attend.

“It’s been a long road,” Bo Bennett said. “This will be the 39 forum all the candidates have attended.”

The forum was broadcasted live on WATE channel 6 and on WNOX 100.1. Gene Patterson moderated the questions which let the candidates convey their final message before early voting begins.

Questions asked included how the mayor would help stimulate business growth and how the mayor would help with air quality control.

“This was a great opportunity for us to have our last say before the public goes out and votes,” Bennett said. “Early voting begins the 7 and ends the 22. The primary election is the 27. It’s important that all citizens get out vote and have a say in the direction that their city goes. As I have said at almost every event: I want to see the city change from the inside out. I want the mayor of Knoxville to be there for the people; I believe I can deliver that.”

Update on the Past Few Weeks

In the last few weeks, Bo has been on the campaign trail and attending several events.

Bo attended the forum on homelessness, which was put on by the Redeeming Hope Ministries.

The panel that asked questions consisted of a senior at the University of Tennessee, a resident of Minvilla and a currently homeless person.

That same evening, the mayoral candidates attended a forum on disabilities hosted by the Mayor’s Committee on Disability Issues.

After each of these events, Bo was able to meet with the citizens of Knoxville and hear their concerns for the city.

Another event, which the candidates participated in, has been a forum hosted by the NAACP at the Beck Cultural Center.

In this forum, citizens were able to ask questions about the issues that pertained the most to them.

Candidates also met with residents after this event.

The Compassion Group of Knoxville released their recommendations on how to better help the homeless of Knoxville on August 17.

After the release of the recommendations, Bo, along with a nonprofit group, went under the bridge to serve some of the homeless of Knoxville.

“It’s been a whirlwind recently,” Bennett said. “It seems like everyday we have one or two events to attend.”

Although Bennett couldn’t attend the revealing of the plan, he was out in the field helping the same people that the plan is designed to benefit.

“Unfortunately, I couldn’t be in both places at once,” Bennett said. “But if the plan’s on paper, I’m sure I can pick up a copy later. It’s not everyday, with my schedule, that I have time to directly serve the citizens of Knoxville.”

Chamber Debate

Bo speaks on the Hallerin Hilton Hill post-debate show

The 2011 mayoral candidates for the city of Knoxville participate in a debate put on by the Knoxville Chamber.

Four of the five candidates were present at the Knoxville Coliseum for the July 28 event, which was broadcasted on TV by WBIR and on radio by Citadel Broadcasting.

Bo Bennett, current mayoral candidate, was not able to participate in the debate due to the $10,000 fundraising minimum required by the Chamber.

“At this point, we have done just as much as the other candidates have done,” Bennett said. “We have turned in the financial records, the petition and have participated in virtually the same events. The only difference between myself and the other candidates is the amount of money that we have raised.”

Even though Bennett was not able to participate in the debate, he did attend the event and even received a mention from fellow candidate Ivan Harmon. Bennett also participated in a post-debate interview on the Hallerin Hilton Hill radio show.

Bennett runs a grass roots campaign, which relies more on word of mouth and getting out and talking to voters.

“By running a grass roots campaign, we don’t need to raise the amount of money that other candidates have in their budget,” Bennett said. “Another side of the coin is that I don’t want to ask my constituents for money. I represent the working people and I understand they are not able to give as much as a business.”

Bennett doesn’t describe himself as a typical politician.

“People are disappointed with the results of the politicians they have elected,” Bennett said. “Citizens keep electing politicians and expecting the same results. I don’t like to think of myself as this same type of politician. I want to change the government from the inside out. I want to make sure this is a government for the people, one the citizens of Knoxville can come to and voice their opinions and one that can turn this city in to the best city possible.”

Bennett attends public forum presented by Alpha Mu Lambda

Alpha Mu Lambda, a chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., held a public forum for mayoral candidates at the Fourth Presbyterian Church on May 26.

Each candidate was asked four preset questions and then three questions that were asked by the audience.

Questions ranged from the two most important aspects of the candidate’s platform to the amount senior citizens will pay to ride public transportation.

A question that related well to the main point of Bo Bennett’s campaign, community, was “During the candidacy process, you are out in the community you get to meet people and interact. What do you plan to do, once you are elected mayor, to keep that communication open and to get to know your community better?”

Bennett Participates in Public Forum for Lonas Drive Community Association

Bennett Participates in Public Forum for Lonas Drive Community Association

Current mayoral candidates participated in a public forum hosted by the Lonas Drive Community Association on May 16.

In addition to Bo Bennett, other candidates present included Mark Padgett, Madeline Rogero and Ivan Harmon.

Each candidate was asked four questions and was given two to three minutes to respond appropriately.

Questions for the forum ranged from how to address changes that would affect neighborhood property value to coming up with a multiyear plan of a new pension plan for public employees.

One question that played very well into one of the main points of Bennett’s platform was “How would you advocate involving neighborhoods in making decisions in possible changes, best location of commercial vendors, homeless housing, etc., that might affect property value and the quality of life in their area?”

“One of the big things about our campaign in particular, is we are completely people driven,” Bennett said. “Our goal is solely community based.”
